Atchison County I-29 to be Restored to Four Lanes at the Nishnabotna River

Construction is wrapping up for the year on the Interstate 29 twin bridges over the Nishnabotna River in Atchison County. Crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, led the rehabilitation project of the north and southbound bridges located just south of the Iowa state line at mile marker 123.

The southbound bridge will open today and all four lanes of traffic at this location will be restored. The process to open all lanes could take several hours while barricades are moved. Motorists should expect delays.

The northbound bridge was completed in 2021 and the southbound bridge rehabilitation began in March 2022. Traffic has been narrowed to one lane, each direction, during the rehabilitation.

One remaining piece of work, the replacement of a bridge joint on the northbound bridge, will take place in 2023. During that work, traffic will be diverted to one lane each direction on the southbound bridge. More information about the schedule of that work will be provided as it becomes available.
