Basilica Enhancements Completed At Conception

Enhancements to the sanctuary in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception have been completed.

The work was originally planned as part of Conception Abbey’s 150th anniversary but delayed as part of the 1999 Basilica renewal plan due to cost constraints. The work included new decoration of the the wall behind the sanctuary, known as the “reredos”. It serves as the backdrop for liturgical action and separates the altar area.

The upgrade also includes the addition of an aedicle to the center section of the reredos. The idea of the addition is to draw the eye upward to the saints and the Immaculate Conception mural.
