Cameron Low Income Housing Project No Longer Receiving Tax Breaks

A low-income housing project in Cameron is no longer receiving tax breaks.

A 17-duplex North Star Housing senior complex being built south of the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron is expected to be finished in the next 13 to 15 months according to media sources.

Cameron residents came forward to express opposition to tax abatements that the developer once thought would be essential. The Cameron City Council voted unanimously on Monday night to permit the city to rescind the property and sales tax abatements.

Project supporters say that veterans housed at the state facility will have an opportunity to move into the new duplexes while opponents were against an effort by the planners that would have defined the site as a blighted area that would help fulfill a stipulation for its redevelopment. Those opponents now appear to be appeased and will not protest the construction now that the abatements are gone.
