Chair of the US Surface Transportation Board Discusses Merger of Kansas City Southern and Canadian Pacific

(MISSOURINET) – The U-S Surface Transportation Board has approved the 31-billion-dollar merger of the Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern railroads, which will now be known as Canadian Pacific Kansas City. Board chair, Martin Oberman, talked about the decision in an online news conference:

Oberman says the roots of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern don’t overlap – meaning, they don’t serve the same origins or destinations, so there’ll be no loss of a parallel competitive route. Opponents, including Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, argued the merger would reduce competition, raise shipping costs, and raise safety concerns.
