DESE Grievance Process Discussed

When parents disagree with what or how their child is being taught at school, they may contact the teacher or principal to discuss their concerns.

Senate Bill 352 would give Missouri parents the opportunity to appeal to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

A representative from the Missouri School Board Association who came to testify in opposition to the bill said there are already processes in place for parents to address concerns to school districts, and additional regulation would undermine the authority of local school boards.

If implemented, the act would first require parents to file a formal objection to the school board before appealing to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
