Gas Tax Increase Takes Effect Friday

Missouri’s first gas tax increase in 25 years will take effect Friday. The tax will increase by two and a half cents on October 1st. More increases are planned in the future. Every July 1st we will see another increase until it reaches a total twelve and a half cent increase in 2025.

When fully implemented, the Missouri Department of Transportation estimates an additional $460 million will be generated annually for Missouri’s roads and bridges.

For those who don’t want to the pay the increase, an option is available to recoup the money. Fuel purchased in Missouri for vehicles weighing less than 26,000 pounds is eligible for a refund. Individuals will have to apply for a refund between July 1st and September 30th of the next year.

The increase is meant to cover an $800 million deficit for road work that Missouri sees each year. Lawmakers passed the tax increase with a final vote of 104 to 52.
