Governor Reynolds Attributes Stable Iowa Student Scores to Quick Return to In-Person Learning

DES MOINES, IA – Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds released a statement in response to the math and reading assessments of 4th and 8th graders in the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress.

Nationwide numbers show students fell behind in the largest ever decline in scores, which is attributed to the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Governor Reynolds points out that Iowa’s scores show “no significant change,” ranking 7th overall in 4th grade math; 15th in 4th grade reading; 15th in 8th grade made and 20th in 8th grade readings. Reynolds attributes the stability in Iowa students scores to the state being the first in the nation to reopen schools during the pandemic. In Iowa, students returned to the classroom for in-person learning in August 2020. Reynolds said the dedication of school administrators, teachers and staff help keep students on track.
