Graves Introduces Postal Service Rate-Setting Resolution
Missouri 6th District Congress Sam Graves has introduced a resolution with Democratic Congressman Emanuel Cleaver and Kansas Congressman Jake LaTurner which Graves says is intended to reign in rapidly raising postal rates.
The Ensuring Accurate Postal Rate Act would direct the Postal Regulatory Commission to re-examine a rate-setting structure created in 2020. Graves says the new system allowed the Postal Service to adjust rates to account for inflation, declining mail volume, and rising retiree costs. Previously, the rates were adjusted for only inflation. Graves says the U.S. Postal Service announced a $59.7 billion net profit in the third quarter of the fiscal year since Congress lifted the mandate that the Postal Service pre-fund retiree benefits. He says the Postal Service also received $10 billion in COVID relief funding.
Graves feels a new postal evaluation is necessary with Americans struggling to deal with the rising costs of inflation.
