Inmate Suicide At Clay County Detention Center

Clay County authorities say they are investigating an apparent suicide at the Clay County Detention Center early this morning (Monday).

Authorities say detectives are investigating the apparent suicide of 42-year-old Independence resident Ryan Everson just after Midnight this morning. Everson was booked into the Clay County Detention Center January 12 to await trial on charges of non-support of a child.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says Detention Center staff discovered Everson unresponsive in his cell during their hourly checks shortly after midnight Monday. Detention officers and deputies, as well as the jail’s contracted medical care providers, performed CPR and attempted to use an AED (automated external defibrillator) to revive Everson before emergency medical personnel arrived, but he could not be resuscitated.

Everson had no cell mate and was alone in his cell when he was discovered unresponsive.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office’s Investigations Unit is reviewing the incident.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office they make “every effort to ensure the safety and wellness of inmates, to include providing 40 hours of in-house mental health care weekly.”
