Iowa DCI Investigating Shooting Death Incident In Ringgold County

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating a self-shooting death late Sunday evening that resulted in the death of a suspect being pursued by law enforcement. The incident began with a 9-1-1 call indicating a suspect had displayed a gun in a threatening manner in Kellerton and left the area in a vehicle. The suspect was identified as Chance Newton.

The Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department says deputies and other area law enforcement officers located and pursued the vehicle. When the suspect returned to Kellerton, he fired shots at a pursuing deputy and hit the deputy’s vehicle. The pursuit eventually ended when the suspect shot himself.

Chance Newton died at the scene. No officers were injured or fired their weapons during the incident.
