Iowa Governor Calls Special Season Regarding Abortion Legislation
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has called a special session of the Iowa Legislature to enact legislation regarding abortion and protecting unborn lives.
Within the statement announcing the call for a special session, Reynolds says Iowans elected representatives willing to stand up for rights of the unborn and says the Iowa Supreme Court’s 3-3 decision in June on whether a lower court’s injunction of the Fetal Heartbeat Law should be dissolved disregards the will of Iowa voters and lawmakers.
The Fetal Heartbeat law was passed by the Iowa legislature in 2018 but struck down by a district court in January of 2019. The district court ruled that it violated the Iowa Constitution and reasoned there was no state interest in banning abortions so early in pregnancy. The case was then appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court.
Reynolds also stated that she believes the pro-life movement is the most important human rights cause of our time.
