Little Otter Creek Construction Set to Begin Soon

A nearly 30-year effort to build the Little Otter Creek Reservoir in Caldwell County is about to come to fruition.

Final permits to build the 344-acre reservoir were issued in October and bids for tree removal and harvesting are currently underway. The goal is to have those trees in the vicinity of where the dam will be cleared before the end of March.

Planners say the final bidding and contracting will take place this summer and dam construction beginning this fall.

Once completed the $25.6-million project will serve as the primary water source for Caldwell County. It is estimated the reservoir will provide 1.2 million gallons of water per day for the county as well as recreation and flood control.

The project is funded primarily through federal funds provided by the USDA’s Natural Resource Conservation Service in addition to Caldwell County’s 0.5% sales tax, and State of Missouri appropriations.

The project groundbreaking ceremony that had been scheduled for January 15th has been postponed due to Covid related travel restrictions for the project’s Federal partners and will be rescheduled when all partners can participate.
