McMullen Talks About His Bill on Congressional Residency

A Republican lawmaker from Independence wants to require candidates for Congress to live in the district they’re seeking to represent.

State Representative Aaron McMullen says under current law, someone living in St. Louis or Kansas City could run for one of Missouri’s rural congressional districts and vice-versa:

No one testified against the bill at a recent public hearing.

If passed, anyone wanting to run for the U.S. House in Missouri would have to live in the district they want to represent for at least two years before filing as a candidate.

Since there’s less than a month left in this year’s legislative session, McMullen is hoping to add his bill to another one that’s farther along in the process.
