Missouri Study Says Drug to Help Shrink Substance Use Cravings is Highly Under Prescribed

(MISSOURINET) – A former University of Missouri student has been studying alcohol use disorder, a medical condition illustrated by an inability to stop or control alcohol use despite the consequences. Jason Ipsarides (ip-suh-REED-us) studied at an inpatient psychiatric site for recovering alcoholics in Wisconsin.

He wants to create more awareness about naltrexone (nal-trex-ohn), which blocks brain receptors that reinforce addictive behaviors like alcohol use disorder. He found that 36% of patients in a controlled group and 40% of patients in an intervention group left with a prescription.
