Mount Ayr City Voters Approve March Referendums

Both of the referendums on the ballot before Mount Ayr voters on Tuesday were approved.

Measure A allows the city to enter into a loan that will pay off no more than $2 million dollars in general obligation bonds to finance the cost of construction, furnishings, and equipment for a public swimming pool. Measure A was approved with 200 voting in favor and 89 voting against. That was a percentage of 69 to 31 in favor.

Measure B allows the imposition of an Option Sales Tax for Mount Ayr which will use at least 25 percent for the construction of a public swimming pool/aquatic center. No more than 75 percent of the revenue from the option sales tax could be used for street improvements, economic development, housing, or other purposes determined by the Mount Ayr City Council. That measure was approved 217 in favor to 72 opposed. That translates to 75 percent approval.

At Mount Ayr’s council meeting on Monday, a discussion was held on developing a mission statement for a Strategic Planning Committee. City Administrator Brett Wise noted that the Water Tower Agreement with Utility Service Company has expired. An update on the city’s sanitary sewer overflow response has presented. The city was also notified of a proposal for drudging Loch Ayr Lake.
