NTSB Gives Initiation Information On Mendon Train

The National Transportation Safety Board arrived Tuesday at the site of a train derailment near Mendon that killed 4 people Monday. Jennifer Homendy of the NTSB addressed the media for the first time.

The incident took place at what is termed a passive railroad crossing.

Several factors will be involved in the actual determination of the cause of the accident.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported 4 fatalities from the incident and 150 people were taken to 10 different hospitals within the region. Homendy is waiting to provide that type of updated information.

She says the Missouri Department of Transportation had the crossing on a list due for an upgrade.

She also talked about the financial responsibility of the upgrade.

Homendy says the NTSB has made safety recommendations for railroad crossings for the past 24 years.

2 of the NTSB team members are meeting with victims and families .  Homendy says she is confident that the investigation will yield the likely cause of the incident.
