One Killed, Three Critically Injured In Union County Accident

A Tingley 19-year-old died and 5 others were reported injured, 3 critically, following a two vehicle accident in Union County late Friday evening.

The Iowa State Patrol reports the accident took place at the intersection of Highway 34 and 190th street east of Afton around 10:30pm Friday evening.

19-year-old Madalynn Stewart of Maloy was operating a vehicle which failed to stop and entered the intersection. An eastbound vehicle driven by 59-year-old Andy Merritt of Seymour struck the driver’s side of Stewart’s vehicle. Both vehicles went into the ditch. 19-year-old Halsie Barnes of Tingley was a passenger in Stewart’s vehicle and died at the scene of the accident.

Madalynn Stewart and 19-year-old Ella Leonard of Winterset were both flown to Des Moines hospitals. 20-year-old Abigail Barnes of Lamoni was also taken to Methodist hospital by ambulance. Andy Merritt and 62-year Julie Merritt of Seymour were reported to be injured.
