South Harrison Board Discusses Potential High Needs Classroom For Elementary School
South Harrison Principal Jason Slaughter and Athletic Director Kale Watson reviewed some of the plans being considered for levels of sponsorship that will be available for businesses and families for South Harrison’s Memorial Field lighting and scoreboard projects planned for the school’s football and track facility with South Harrison School Board members on Monday night. The sponsorships would allow static signage and video advertisements within high school sports activities. Video boards would be installed at the football stadium and the high school gymnasium. Athletic Director Watson stated that students could be utilized for the video production at the events. Board members approved fundraising to be sought for the project. Superintendent Dennis Eastin announced that $20,000 has been pledged for the project at this point. South Harrison will be fundraising for new lighting in addition to the video boards. The new lighting at the football and track complex will need to include 4 new 75-foot poles to allow for maximum lighting efficiency.
South Harrison’s board also gave their tentative approval to allow the school district to pursue a new specialized position at the South Harrison Elementary School. The qualified candidate would potentially fill a High Needs Classroom position at the elementary. The High Needs Classroom would cater to the special sensory, therapy, communication, and functional needs of students. A Special Education degree would be required of the candidate in addition to special training. During the presentation to the board, an estimate of 12 students was made for the class.
North Central Career Center Director Erik
Coffey also detailed the air filtration system which has been financed with federal ESSER III funding. The system is part of the Career Center’s Welding Lab Clean Air Project. The $132,000 of ESSER III funding is providing air filtration and duct work for all individual booths. The project is intended to improve the working conditions and the air quality for students.
South Harrison’s board will also receive a recommendation from an audit committee as the district searches for a new auditor.
