South Harrison Board Reviews School Campus Upgrades During August Session

South Harrison School Board members held their August session following a bus ride to the South Harrison Elementary School and a look at the upgrades for that facility being completed this summer prior to the start of the new school year during a meeting held Monday night. The bus ride was taken on the new electric bus that has been purchased by the district with the help of several funding sources. The upgrades at the elementary school include new tiling and a remodel of South Harrison’s front office building at the elementary. That remodel will include an extra layer of security which will allow items to be taken to the school and placed at the elementary office window without the person needing to enter the school facility.

South Harrison’s board also approved the 2022-23 tax rate for the district during a meeting Monday night. South Harrison’s board approved tax rate of $4.33 per hundred dollars of assessed valuation. The levy breaks down to $3.68 for the incident fund and 65 cents for the capital projects fund.

Superintendent Dennis Eastin updated the board on new and/or upcoming school laws. Medical providers have been notified that the school will need dates for students students will need to be homebound for an extended time. The school will provide a representative to make homebound visits.

Schools will be required to test their water for lead in the next 3 years.

An imaginary library next fall will require a student under 5 years to receive one book per month. The cost of those books will be reimbursed through a foundation.

A Holocaust recognition segment will be required in school during the second week of April. Learning projects will be part of the segment.

Schools will be expected to adhere to the Supreme Court decision regarding the Kennedy vs Bremerton School District involving the parameters for prayer as a freedom of speech.
