Today is Lighting Safety Day

Severe Weather Week continues today with Lightning Safety Day.

According to NOAA, lightning kills 20 or more people in the United States each year, and hundreds more are severely injured.

It is advised that if you hear thunder, you should move indoors because you are likely within striking distance of the storm. The National Weather Service says there is no safe place outside when thunderstorms are in the area, and reminds you When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors.

If you cannot get indoors, avoid open fields, hilltops, and stay away from tall isolated trees. If you are camping, set up in a lower area and remember that a tent offers no protection.
