Two St. Joseph Residents Injured in Icy Tuesday Morning Crash on I-29

Two Saint Joseph residents suffered injuries in a Tuesday morning crash in Buchanan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred on I-29, in the city limits of Saint Joseph, as a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Gabriela L. Mauricio drove northbound.

Authorities say Mauricio lost control on the frost-covered road entering I-29 from U.S. 36 eastbound and became perpendicular in the roadway.

Another northbound vehicle then struck Mauricio’s vehicle and rotated it into the front of a third northbound vehicle driven by 26-year-old Saint Joseph resident Zachariah A. Smith.

The collision sent Smith’s vehicle into a bridge rail before it ultimately came to a rest.

Mauricio’s vehicle came to a rest facing south on the guardrail, off the west side of the road.

Troopers say Mauricio and Smith suffered moderate and serious injuries, respectively.

Both sought treatment at Mosaic Life Care.

Authorities say Smith was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
