The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team exploded for a 12-2 seven-inning win Monday in wrapping up a three-game set at Northeastern State.

Northwest moved its season mark to 6-21 overall and 4-12 in MIAA play.

Bearcat starter Alex Slocum went the distance as he struck out a career-high tying eight. It’s the third time in his career that Slocum has struck out eight batters. Slocum scattered four hits and two runs (one earned) in his second career complete game.

Senior Ryan Koski put up a career-high seven RBI as he went 3-for-4 with a three-run double and a grand slam. Koski also drew a walk. Freshman Trey Morris went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

Koski has connected on a team-best eight home runs this season … Koski has bashed 17 career home runs … Koski’s 17 homers ties him for No. 10 on Northwest’s all-time home run list …

 

 

The Heart of America Athletic Conference announced its Heart Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week on Monday, as Eden Clifton of Graceland University was named the Heart Track Athlete of the Week and Kiana Ortiz of Culver-Stockton College earned the Heart Field Athlete of the Week.

Clifton earned three first-place finishes at the Viking Invitational last week, winning the women’s 100-meter dash in a time of 12.26, she also won the women’s 200-meter dash in a time of 25.89 and helped lead the Yellowjackets 4×100-meter relay team to a first-place finish time of 52.85.

 

Northwest is in second place as a squad and leads the field with 11 birdies. Northwest holds a 6-shot lead over the third place team, Maryville University.

Sophomore Kylie Carey led the way for the Bearcats firing a career best 74 (+2) and currently is tied for second. Carey is tied for the field best three birdies on the day. Carey was also first against the field on Par-5 holes with an average 4.67, Carey carded two birdies on Par-5’s on the day.

Hosting their own home tournament at the St. Joseph Country Club, Griffon Women’s Golf and Florence Phan both stand alone in first place after one day of play at the MWSU Holiday Inn Express Classic.

Phan shot +1 above par for a round-one score of 73, a tie for her lowest-round total this season. Phan leads the pack with 15 pars made through 18 holes, with Mariana Casadiego and Ines Vandaele right behind her in second with 14 apiece. Casadiego is also tied for fifth at +3 above par for a round-one total of 75, a new season-low of her own.

Through 18 holes at the Adams Pointe Golf Club, Griffon Men’s Golf is in tied for third place after day one of the NSIC Preview Invitational.

Jeffry Johnston is leading the way for Missouri Western, shooting even for a score of 72. Meanwhile, Sergey Mironov sank an eagle, something only four other golfers did the entire day. Mironov and Jake Mikesch are both tied for 16th with a score of 73, putting them +1 above par.

Missouri Western shot +6 above par, putting the Griffons at 294 after 18 holes, tying them for for third with Winona State. Both squads are seven strokes out of a tie for second place with Rogers State, while Central Missouri leads the 20-team tournament with a score of 282, shooting -6 below par.
