Platte Valley Girls Keep Chance To Defend Class 1 Title, South Harrison Denied Upset In MSHSAA Quarterfinals

The Platte Valley girls will join the boys at the 2023 MSHSAA Show-Me Showdown. Platte Valley used a dominant defense and a big third quarter to beat Santa Fe in the Class 1 Girls Quarterfinal 50-20 on Saturday afternoon at Missouri Western.

Platte Valley held Santa Fe to just 2 points in the first quarter and 6 points in the first half. Platte Valley used a man-to-man defense to limit good offensive shot opportunities by the Lady Chiefs and generally kept Santa Fe to just one shot when they did get looks. Platte Valley was somewhat limited themselves offensively in the first half. They scored just 17 points but still led by 11 at halftime. Santa Fe would pressure some in the half court, but played a tight 2-3 zone and collapsed when Platte Valley got the ball into the lane with touches from Maggie Collins and Aubrey Mattson. Santa Fe pulled to within 19-10 in the 3rd quarter, but Platte Valley got 3-point shots from Sarah Langford and Maleeah Bliley out of the time out and went on to score 21 points in the period to stretch the lead to 38-14. Platte Valley would hit a total of 8 3-point shots for the game.

Brylie Angle scored 13 points. Sarah Langford had 10. Maleeah Bliley had 9. Maggie Collins scored another 8.

Platte Valley moves to 27-3 on the season. Platte Valley will face Chadwick in the MSHSAA semi-finals Thursday afternoon, March 9th, at 4pm.

In the Class 3 Quarterfinal at Missouri Western Saturday, El Dorado Springs used pressure to force some transition, but also hit 8 3-point shots and beat South Harrison 63-34 to advance to the Class 3 semis. The defending Class 3 champions hit 6 of those 3-point shots in the first half. South Harrison didn’t have a bad first quarter thanks to work from Hannah Carter inside and Abigail Malloy’s attacks to the basket, but El Dorado Springs scored the first 10 points in the 2nd quarter to turn a 20-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter to 38-21 at halftime. Macy Mays scored 28 in the game for El Dorado Springs. 4 other players scored between 6 and 10 points. South Harrison’s season ends at 23-6. Hannah Carter scored 14 points. Abigail Molloy scored 9.
