Platte Valley Strikes Late To Secure Semi-final Baseball Playoff Berth

Platte Valley’s baseball team put a nearly 3-hour bus ride, a brief downpour before the game, and a one-run deficit in the 6th inning behind them and advanced to the MSHSAA Class 1 Baseball Semi-finals on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over North Shelby in a game played at Macon.

Platte Valley surrendered the first run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning when a walk, stolen base, and misplayed fly ball allowed the Raiders to get the first run of the game. Platte Valley answered with a double from Wyatt Miller in the top of the 4th. He advanced to 3rd on a fielder’s choice and scored on a ground out. North Shelby got the lead back in the bottom of the inning when another misplayed fly ball led to a runner at 2nd base with nobody out. North Shelby’s Cale Stoneburner would eventually score on a balk. Platte Valley head coach Zach Dyer thought some nerves may have showed in the game.

Platte Valley tied the game in the 6th when Wyatt Miller walked, Landon Wiederholt singled, and Justin Miller pushed a ground ball from the plate that scored runner Carter Luke.  North Shelby made another bid to get the lead back in the bottom of the 6th when Keaton Roan singled to center, but Lane Acklin threw out Landon Bender at the plate to keep the game tied and give Platte Valley some momentum going into their 7th inning at bat.

Alex Mattson opened the 7th with a double. Wyatt Miller walked one out later. Landon Wiederholt got another single to load the bases. Brandon McQueen walked to give Platte Valley their first lead. Justin Miller then drove in an insurance run with a ground ball to 2nd.

Memphis Bliley struck out the side in the 9th.

Bliley struck out 9 in the game. Wyatt Miller was responsible for getting on base, and Carter Luke scored the 3 runs as a result of the at-bats for Platte Valley. Platte Valley is now 18-2 on the season. They will face St Elizabeth in the semi-finals Monday night at 7pm.
