South Iron Game Speed Wears Down Mound City In Class 1 MSHSAA Boys Title Game

Mound City got off the mat from the first attack made by the other Panthers from the southeast part of the state, but eventually, South Iron’s consistent attacking style and poor perimeter shooting took over the game as South Iron won their first MSHSAA Class 1 Boys Championship in 56 years with a 69-50 victory in Springfield Saturday afternoon at JQH Arena.

South Iron opened the game in nearly the same manner as they did on Friday in their semi-final against Higbee.  South Iron came out attacking the basket and, aided in part by 11 consecutive missed shots by Mound City in the first quarter, led 13-4 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Mound City recovered from that attack.  Tony Osborn scored 14 by himself in the 2nd quarter, and Mound City scored 25 in the period as they worked their way back into the lead at halftime 29-28.

Osborn hit another 3 to begin the 3rd, but South Iron started to take control of the game as the 3rd period went on.  South Iron’s Brock Wakefield did most of his damage attacking the basket.  He scored 22 points.  South Iron also hit the offensive boards when Mound City’s Landon Poppa helped on the initial drives.  Marco Burse many of his 20 points off 6 offensive rebounds.  He had 13 rebounds in total for the game.

Tony Osburn scored 24 to pace Mound City.  Landon Poppa scored another 10 for Mound City.

Mound City finishes the season 29-2
