Tiger Seniors Star In Win For Trip To MSHSAA Semi-finals
Worth County Quarterback Tyler New ran for 4 touchdowns and threw for another two, and Grant McIntyre had two receiving touchdowns and ran back a pick six as Worth County dominated their quarterfinal game in the MSHSAA 8-Man playoffs Saturday afternoon, beating Schuyler County 70-16 at Matteson Field in Grant City.
On a beautiful afternoon for football, Worth County scored on all 4 of their first quarter possessions, and all but two of their first half possessions, to take a 54-8 lead at halftime. Quarterback Tyler New ran his first touchdown in with a 31-yard run just 1:21 into the game. He also ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. After Worth County stopped the Rams on four downs, New ran another TD in from 14 yards out. He also ran in another two-point conversion for a 16-0 lead.
Grant McIntyre caught a 17-yard pass for a TD with 5:18 left in the 1st quarter. Landon Wilmes had the two-point conversion, and Worth County went to a 24-0 lead.
Tyler New finished the first quarter scoring with a 33-yard TD run. New’s scoring finished for the day when he capped another scoring sequence, set up by a 4th down stop and a long pass play to Bo Collins.
McIntyre finished Worth County’s scoring in the 1st half. He caught a 29-yard pass with 7:47 left. Worth County led 46-0 after the two-point conversion. Schuyler County hit two big plays to get on the board for the first time with 5:56 left in the 2nd. They also recovered a fumble off Worth County’s ensuing possession, but Grant McIntyre ran back an interception. He also caught the two-point conversion pass to complete Worth County’s first half scoring.
Landon Wilmes scored on Worth County’s opening possession in the 3rd period, a possession which came after the Rams used up the first 9 minutes of the period with a running clock, but the drive ended at the Worth County 5-yard-line.
Cole Ruby had the final touchdown run for the Tigers.
Worth County will head to Oregon Friday afternoon for their semi-final game with undefeated South Holt. That game time will be at 3pm
