The Missouri Department of Health reports Influenza Cases has dropped over previous weeks. Week 47 ended with 103 reported cases statewide, which is down from 180 the prior week, and 157 cases two weeks prior. Fifty-seven percent of flu cases this year has been reported in children ages 0-4. Twenty-one percent occurred in ages 5-24. And eighteen percent in adults 65 years and older.
The hardest hit area of the state has been in the southeast, where 45% of the total cases has been reported. The northwest part of the state has had the fewest number of reported cases of flu with only 12% of the total.
The 2019-2020 influenza year has been about average. Since 2016, most cases have been reported from the last two weeks of the year and lasted into the 16th week of the new year.
The Iowa Department of Public Health has reported only 74 cases of influenza during this flu year. Thirty percent of those cases were in youth ages 5-17 and 20% in adults age 50-64. The hardest hit part of Iowa is in the Southwest, where 29% of the state’s cases have been reported.
