Barbara Jane Horn, age 91, was born July 18, 1932, in Oceanside, California, the daughter of William D. and Grace B. (Lewis) Carmichael. She left this life on January 24, 2024, at Walnut Ridge Long Term Care in Clive, Iowa.

Barbara attended school in Oceanside before the family moved to Carlsbad, California, when she was seven. She attended school there until high school, finishing back in Oceanside and graduating from the joint Oceanside – Carlsbad Union High School. She then attended and graduated from Oceanside Junior College. She earned her BA degree from San Diego State University in San Diego, California. She moved to Berkley, California and taught in the Oakland Public Schools in Oakland, California. It was there she met her future husband, Donald Bowman Horn. They married in Carlsbad in 1956, and were blessed with two sons, Derek D. Horn and Roark R. Horn.

Don, Barbara, and the boys lived in the San Francisco East Bay area until moving to Don’s family home in Leon, Iowa in 1969.

Barbara surrendered her life to Jesus as her Lord and Savior and was baptized in her teens. She was always interested in participating in small groups studying the Bible and taught Sunday School classes to various age groups for many years. She was an interested and active friend of the Leon Loving Chapel United Methodist Church where she served.

Barbara was a member of several clubs in Leon and also served the community on various boards but her family was her main interest in life. She also enjoyed playing Bridge, Trivial Pursuit, and doing counted cross stitch.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Don in January 2016; brother, Charles Carmichael; brothers-in-law, Bill Horn, Chuck Broman, Kenneth White, Kenneth Horn, and Lee Schoonover; and sisters-in-law, Eveline Horn, Mildred Broman, Pauline White, Betty Schoonover, Margaret Horn, and Frances Mark. Survivors include her sons, Derek Horn of Phoenix, Arizona and Roark Horn and wife, Jean, of Clive, Iowa; AFS son, Gene Araya and daughters of Costa Rica; granddaughters, Shannon Erb and husband, Jon, of Leon and Megan Horn of Waterloo, Iowa; grandson, James Horn of Chicago, Illinois; sister, Judith Alt and husband, John of Vacaville, California; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Private funeral services will be held. A memorial gathering and lunch will be held at Noon in the Basement of the Loving Chapel United Methodist Church in Leon, Iowa on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon.
