Dennis Ray Smith, age 63, of Lyford, Texas, the son of Raymond Howard and Hazel Irene (Rauch) Smith, was born September 6, 1958, in Leon, Iowa. He died at the Solara Specialty Hospital in McAllen, Texas on Sunday, September 12, 2021.

Dennis grew up and attended school in Leon, Iowa. He graduated from Central Decatur High School with the Class of 1976. Dennis started out farming with his dad and farmed alone after his untimely death, which was just the beginning of his many endeavors. Throughout his life, Dennis was a successful farmer and cattle rancher, owned and operated M&M Welding Shop with brother-in-law, Richard Perry, started Future Heirlooms cabinet wood shop, and had a good feel for buying and selling farmland. He had a sharp mind, was good at running figures in his head, had a great memory, and could fix almost anything. He always could think of a solution to any problem.

On June 18, 1983, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Jane McCollough at Decatur, Iowa. They made their home south of Decatur, Iowa and were blessed with two children, Samantha and Thaddeus. He moved to Texas 2016, where he bought more property and built another home.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Raymond in 1987, and Hazel in 2020; brother, Steve Smith in 2018, and beloved dog, Sadie. Survivors include his children, Samantha Ayers and husband, Jonathan of Afton, Iowa and Thaddeus Smith and wife, Angie of Prole, Iowa; grandchildren, Coltin Lewis, Joselyn McWilliams, Ethan Ayers, Shawn Ayers, Cole Baughman, Alysea Baughman, and Tristen Miller; great grandchildren, Aubrie and Aiden Baughman; sister, Marlene Perry and husband, Richard of Decatur, Iowa; sister-in-law, Kim Smith of Leon, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Clayton Smith, Rachel & Steve Paulus, Renee Perry, and Tyler Perry; good friend, Maria Ramirez of Mission, Texas; many cousins; and other relatives and many friends.
