Dorothy Marie Carter – age 73 of Lawson, MO passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 22, 2023, at The University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS, surrounded by her loving family after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Dorothy was born on June 10, 1949, the daughter of Cecil and Opal (Marley) Callaway in Lawson, MO. She was a 1967 graduate of Lawson High School. She married Billy Carter on June 26th, 1978, in Miami, OK. Dorothy was a member of the Polo Christian Church.

She was proud of her home, yard and family, particularly her grandchildren. Dorothy enjoyed her flowers and was always baking brownies. Dorothy worked for Cameron Mutual Insurance company as a secretary in the accounting department for 37 years. She was affectionately known as “Ms. Dorothy” to Bill’s coworkers.  She loved traveling with her cousins.

She was always willing to help anyone who needed it, but never wanted to be recognized for it. She loved having family gatherings at her home and always welcomed her grandkids to visit any time they were in town. You could always find her with trident gum, orange tic-tac’s, or mentos in her purse for sharing. She knew every trick for getting grease, and oil out of any article of clothing and their laundry was always pressed and ready to wear.  Dorothy will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Opal Callaway.

Survivors include her husband Billy Dean Carter; three children: Deana (Brian) Dobson, Craig Carter, and Courtney (Loren) Zirjacks; five grandchildren: Payton (Jake) Hunter, Marley (Roly) Zirjacks, Preslee (Derek) Gunther, Carston Zirjacks, and Lance Corporal Gunner Zirjacks; six great grandchildren; two siblings: Delbert (Diane) Callaway and Beverly McClure as well as many other extended family and friends.
