Helen May Flummer, the daughter of Burl Edgar and Ella (Beers) Warner, was born October 1, 1922, in Decatur County near Grand River, Iowa. She passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at the Chariton Specialty Care Center in Chariton, Iowa at the age of 99 years.

Helen attended rural schools in Decatur County and graduated from Leon High School with a normal training teacher’s certificate in 1941. She began her teaching career in the spring of 1942, in the Lineville School system in Lineville, Iowa. While teaching she was working toward a degree in education by taking night, Saturday, and summer classes. She received her bachelor’s degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

On June 16, 1950, Helen was united in marriage to Albert Flummer at Centerville, Iowa. They lived in the Lineville area where Albert farmed and she taught. After Albert’s death in 1973, she sold the farm and moved into Leon in 1975.

After teaching 39 years, Helen retired from the Clarke Community School District at the Weldon Building in the spring of 1985. She liked to travel and had touched ground in all fifty states and made one tour abroad.

After retiring she was a Decatur County Hospital Auxiliary volunteer. She was a member and worker in the Bethel First Baptist Church until it closed. She then became a member of Trinity Christian Church.

Helen liked to crochet and read. She enjoyed her friends and liked to help others when she could. She cherished the time spent with her family, who all called her Aunt Peggy. Her nieces were very special to her.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert in 1973; brother, Raymond “Bud” Warner and his wife, Hazel; and niece, Rosella Witman, her husband David, and their daughter, Rebecca Witman. Survivors include her niece, Carol Dixson and husband, Rod, of Chariton, Iowa and her sons, Steve, Scott, and Michael Pennington and Jesse Dixson and their families. Also, other relatives and friends survive her.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 2021, with Pastor Terry D. Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Leon Cemetery following.
