In 1979, he started at Crestline Windows and in 1983, he moved his family to Stevens Point, Wisconsin where he was a supervisor for six years. He went back to Crestline and drove a delivery truck from 1993, until 1995, when he became a service tech for the company. After 28 years working for SNE, the parent company of Crestline, he resigned and worked for Lance Bell from 2006, until 2017, when he retired.

On August 3, 2002, he was united in marriage to Sherry Marie McCaull in Leon, Iowa. Her four children, Kendall, Stacy, Selena, and Shelby, became part of his family, too.

In early years, Richard was on the Leon Volunteer Fire Department. He joined the Leon Rodeo Committee in 1974, and continued to help in many ways until the time of his death. He enjoyed his cattle, watching Nascar races, John Wayne movies and MASH on TV, and being a part of R&D Farms with his son since 1992.
