Halfway to the Finish Line: Legislative Bid to Fight Deep Fakes in Elections

Missouri is attempting to take on the use of fake videos, audio, and messages in elections.

The state House of Representatives has passed a bill that aims to fight so-called “deep fakes” of a candidate running for state or local office.

Neosho Representative Ben Baker says his bill does not apply if the messages include a disclaimer stating that the message has been manipulated or generated by artificial intelligence.

Under the bill, the distribution of fake messages would be banned within 90 days of an election of any candidate or party running for office.
