MDC Burn Workshop Coming To Area

Landowners will have a chance to learn the advantages and process of prescribed burns at an upcoming clinic being presented by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

The clinic is being held from 1 until 4 P.M. Thursday, September 15 at the Pony Express Lake Conservation Area north of Osborn.

The workshop will provide basic information about how to plan and execute a prescribed burn for grassland management. The Department of Conservation says prescribed burning can be a valuable tool for managing native plant diversity and controlling undesirable vegetation, but can be dangerous and ineffective if done incorrectly.

While the clinic is free, there is an online prerequisite course registered participants must complete before the clinic. The link to that course will be given once an individual is registered. All registrants for the event must be 18 years of age by September 15th.

If mother nature allows there will be a demonstration burn conducted. Attendees should plan on having appropriate equipment for that burn, such as leather gloves, leather boots, and ALL cotton clothing such as denim or Carhartt-type garments. A cotton bandanna is also advisable.

Refreshments will be provided.
