Registered Sex Offender Facing New Charges in Nodaway County

MARYVILLE, MO – Charges have been filed and the suspect has been taken into custody in a child sexual assault investigation in Nodaway County.

A release from the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation was initiated into the alleged sexual abuse of a seven-year-old child.  Based on information gained during the investigation the sheriff’s office executed a search warrant yesterday (Wednesday) on a residence in Maryville, a male suspect was taken into custody.

Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Tina Deiter filed formal charges today against 36-year-old Brett Michael Poppa for first-degree rape of a child less than 12 years old; sodomy; child molestation; and two counts of sexual misconduct involving a child.

Poppa is in custody of the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office. Bond has been denied.

Poppa is currently listed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol as a registered sex offender on a conviction of child molestation that took place in Nodaway County in 2011. In that case Poppa was sentenced to 5 years in prison in June, 2013.
