Second Teenager Dies as Result of Injuries from Friday Crash in Union County
UNION COUNTY, IA – Another teenager involved in the fatal crash in Union County late Friday has died of her injuries.
An updated report from the Iowa State Patrol says 19-year-old Ella Jo Leonard of Winterset died after being life-flighted to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
The accident occurred around 10:30 pm Friday night at the intersection of Highway 34 and 190th Street. The Patrol says 19-year-old Madalynn Stewart of Maloy was operating a vehicle that failed to stop and entered the intersection. An eastbound vehicle driven by 59-year-old Andy Merritt of Seymour struck the driver’s side of Stewart’s vehicle. Both vehicles went into the ditch. Nineteen-year-old Halsie Barnes of Tingley was a passenger in Stewart’s vehicle and died at the scene of the accident.
Madalynn Stewart was also flown to Des Moines hospitals. 20-year-old Abigail Barnes of Lamoni was also taken to Methodist Hospital by ambulance. Andy Merritt and 62-year Julie Merritt of Seymour were reported to be injured.
