William Leroy Caldwell, 89, St. Joseph, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023.

He was born March 14, 1934, in Altamont, Missouri, to William and Irene (Drummond) Caldwell. He was a graduate of Maysville, Missouri, High School.

Leroy married Alma Lucille “Billie” Crowley on April 21, 1956. She survives of the home.

Leroy worked for the railroad and St. Joseph Stockyards before working as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired after 20-plus years.

Leroy also owned and operated Norty’s Bar and Grill for 20-plus years, where many locals made lasting memories.

He loved to take care of his yard and go boating and fishing, especially at Lake Viking. He was known for making enchiladas, beans and “cold chili.”

Leroy was very loyal to his family, who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Caldwell; his parents; and brother-in-law, Chuck Culver.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Billie; children, Vickie Kanatzar and Steve Kanatzar (Jodi); grandchildren, Brandon Kanatzar (Jalaina), Nicole Montgomery (Michael), Deana Lee (Joe), Brooke Cortez (Robert), and Gabrielle Caldwell; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Culver; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family members, including special cousin, Gordon Wilson.

Farewell Services and Public Livestream 1 p.m. Monday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will gather with friends noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of the donor’s choice.
