Suspect in Saturday Police Shooting Dead

Two Excelsior Springs Police Officers were involved in a shooting Saturday night that left one officer and the suspect wounded. The suspect in the case later died from his injuries.

Just after 5 P.M. Saturday officers with the Excelsior Springs Police located a suspect wanted on a warrant for assault on a law enforcement officer at a local business. Officers tried to stop the suspect vehicle but when they boxed him in, he began firing a weapon hitting one officer in the shoulder and hand.

Officers returned fire hitting the suspect.

That suspect, identified as 64-year-old Excelsior Springs resident Carl J. Carrel, later died from his injuries at a local hospital.

The officer that was injured has required at least two surgeries but his injuries are said to be non-life threatening.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation of the shooting.
