Charlie Spurgeon, 82, of Creston, died Sunday, November 13, 2022, at his home in Creston.

Charles Terry Spurgeon, son of Charles F. Spurgeon and Madelyn R. (Fitzgerald) Spurgeon, was born May 18, 1940, in Blythedale, Missouri. He went to grade school in Blythedale. Charlie enjoyed basketball, track and FFA, he showed pigs at the county fair, and he stayed active helping out on the dairy farm as he grew up. He graduated from the North Harrison High School in Eagleville, Mo. He went on to work at Citizen’s Bank in Blythedale.

In 1959 Charlie was united in marriage to Rebecca Gibson in Eagleville, Mo. They settled in Eagleville where he owned and operated a filling station in Eagleville.

In 1961 Charlie moved his family to Creston and began working for the Burlington Northern Railroad. Charlie and Rebecca later divorced.

In 1981, Charlie was united in marriage to Constance K. Hiatt in Creston, Iowa. They settled in Creston, where Charlie continued with the railroad, retiring in 1991 after 30 years.

While in Creston Charlie served as a part of the Creston City Council. Charlie was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the former President of the local board member of the Quail Unlimited and Pheasants Forever.

Charlie was an avid fisherman and he and Connie enjoyed 26 years of fishing in Canada. Charlie enjoyed his children, grandchildren’s activities and he loved his family dearly.

Survivors include his wife Constance Spurgeon of Creston, 6 children, Lynn (Kirk) Brandt of Corning, Lonna (Earl) Hayes of Morton, Ill., Ryan (Nikki) Spurgeon of Gretna, Neb., Tonya J. Glenn of Creston, Nicholas (Sarah) Jannings and James (Lori) Kinyon, both of Orient; a brother Duane Shaw of Blue Springs, Mo.; a sister Sherry Knorr of Kansas City, Mo.; brother-in-law, Randi (Rose) Hiatt of Creston; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and a step-father Gordon Shaw and two sisters-in-law, Mary Shaw and Angela Hiatt; father & mother-in-law, Manford and Shirley Hiatt.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday November 17, 2022, at the Powers Funeral Home 601 New York Avenue in Creston.  Services will be live streamed.   Pastor Mary O’Riley and Pastor Samuel Ansong will officiate.  Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery of Creston at a later date.
